Title: Legend of Me
Author: Rebekah  L. Purdy
Release Date: Early 2014
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Sixteen-year-old Brielle has grown up hearing tales of a beast that kills humans, leaving behind only a scattering of bones and limbs. Or so the village elders say. She thinks it’s just their way of keeping children in line, though it doesn’t explain her grisly premonitions of blood, claws, and severed heads.
When Lord Kenrick, Knight of the Crowhurst Order, shows up asking questions about the legendary monster and Brielle finds a mangled body in the woods, she begins to wonder if the grim stories are true. Her attraction to the handsome knight grows as she spends time with him searching for clues to the creature’s existence, and she becomes even more determined to help him discover the beast’s location.
But as her seventeenth birthday approaches, her nightmares worsen. If Brielle doesn’t figure out the connection between Kenrick, the monster, and visions of a ghostly woman in the woods soon, more people could die. Including those closest to her…

Brambles scratched my legs, snagging my skirt. Gnarled trees bent in gruesome forms, while thick shadows splayed out beneath them. A heavy gloom settled over the woodland as wisps of fog slithered like snakes against the ground. I shivered.

Don’t think. I picked an animal trail to follow, stepping over dead branches and forest debris. Blood pounded in my ears and the hair on the back of my neck prickled. I twisted around to glance behind me.

Nothing there. Only the trees. Urgency gripped hold of me and I picked up my pace once more. As I scrambled through the thicket, an overwhelming scent of rotten meat made me gag. I covered my mouth with my hand and stopped running when a bright red piece of fabric caught my eye. With hesitant steps, I moved toward it.

“Oh God.” I stumbled. There, sticking out from beneath a barberry bush was a severed arm, its finger pointed at me in accusation. My breath came in gasps as I scanned the rest of the clearing.
My foot nudged against something and I looked down in horror to find the head of Liam Gatekeeper staring up at me.

I screamed, backing away as fast as I could. All around me were pieces of his body scattered like breadcrumbs. I shielded my eyes with my hands, until I bumped into something else.

With another scream, I whipped around only to find myself faced with an oak tree covered in dried blood and deep claw marks. My vision darkened and I prayed I wouldn’t faint, that I wouldn’t be stuck in the woods. Because somewhere out here, a monster lurked. If I didn’t believe it before, I did now. The beast was real.

An engrossing, complex, romantic fantasy perfect for fans of Kristin Cashore or Maggie Stiefvater, set in a wholly unique world.Salome Montgomery fears winter—the cold, the snow, the ice, but most of all, the frozen pond she fell through as a child. Haunted by the voices and images of the strange beings that pulled her to safety, she hasn’t forgotten their warning to "stay away." For eleven years, she has avoided the winter woods, the pond, and the darkness that lurks nearby. But when failing health takes her grandparents to Arizona, she is left in charge of maintaining their estate. This includes the "special gifts" that must be left at the back of the property.

Salome discovers she’s a key player in a world she’s tried for years to avoid. At the center of this world is the strange and beautiful Nevin, who she finds trespassing on her family’s property. Cursed with dark secrets and knowledge of the creatures in the woods, his interactions with Salome take her life in a new direction. A direction where she’ll have to decide between her longtime crush Colton, who could cure her fear of winter. Or Nevin who, along with an appointed bodyguard, Gareth, protects her from the darkness that swirls in the snowy backdrop. An evil that, given the chance, will kill her.

The sky darkened with ominous storm clouds. Giant flakes fell onto my face, sticking to my eyelashes and cheeks. Snow blew unhindered across the yard into what looked like small tornadoes.

Oh God. It’s happening again. The frigid air. The creaking of the treetops beneath the wind. Even the way the snow blew across the yard.

I only had one more feeder. Just needed to toss the seeds in then I could leave. Be safe.

The pond water rippled, while the trees bent beneath the strong gusts. Soon, everything became so white I couldn't see the house. In the distance a strange tinkling sounded, like dozens of wind chimes.

What had the shrink told me to do?

Ten, nine, eight. Breathe. Seven, six, five. Shit!

Panic stole my thoughts. I backed away from the pond as the flurries swirled toward me. Chasing me.
Then, I bumped into something—something that felt quite human. A firm chest, arms, hands. Not something, someone. A shriek tumbled from my lips and I spun around to face my captor.
“It’s okay. I won’t hurt you,” a soft masculine voice said, pale hands clinging to my arms as he kept me from falling.

My gaze followed those long fingers, up black leather sleeves, to the most gorgeous face I’d ever seen. My breath caught in my throat. I’m gawking. But I couldn't help it. His raven hair shot with strands of blue, his face pale and perfect, like an ice sculptor had chiseled it into existence. His eyes—oh God, his eyes. They were the palest blue I’d ever seen. Glacial. He had to be over six feet tall, muscles evident through the tight shirt he wore beneath an unzipped jacket.

His mouth turned up at the corners as if enjoying my scrutiny. A cocky grin that made my cheeks warm.

“You’re trespassing.” I tried to keep the tremble from my voice. “This is private property, or can’t you read the signs?” Bravo, that’s right, scare him off with your bitchiness.

He chuckled. And it sounded like the low song of the chimes. “Doris doesn't mind me coming around. In fact, I've met you before, Salome.”

My name on his lips made my knees go buttery. I groaned inwardly.

“You know my grandma?” I fidgeted with the bucket still in hand.

He gave a nod. “Yeah, I've known her for years. But I haven’t seen you since you were a child.”

Warning bells went off in my mind, but I pushed them aside. If he knew my grandma, then he must be okay.

“Funny, I don’t remember you at all.”

“Don’t you, Salome?” Strands of my hair blew about my face. He reached a hand out as if to touch them then stopped, dropping his arms back to his side.

“No. Grandma’s never mentioned you.”

He gave me another cocky grin. “Well then, maybe we should be reacquainted.”

“Or maybe not.” I snorted. “I’m not sure how you got on the property, Grandma keeps all the gates locked.”

He produced an antique-looking skeleton key. “She gave me this. Like I said, Doris has known me for a long time.”

“I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be a jerk or anything, it’s just my grandma never mentioned I’d have visitors.” In fact, I wondered why she didn't ask this guy to watch her house instead of me.

The arrogance left his face and he stared at me. “Perhaps, we can try this again.” He held his hand out to me. “I’m Nevin.”

About the Author:

Rebekah was born and raised in Michigan (just look for the mitten-shaped state on the map). She’s lived there most of her life other than the few years she spent in the U.S. Army.  At which time she got a chance to experience MO, KS, SC, and CA.

She works full time for the court system and in her free time she writes YA stories. Pretty much any genre within the YA realm is game for her, but her favorites are fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, thrillers, light sci-fi, and some time travel.

She also has a big family–she like to considers them the modern day Brady Bunch. When her hubby and her met and got married, he had 3 children from a previous marriage, she had 2, and  they have 1 together. It’s a lot of fun though.

And she can’t forget her other family members–yep, they've got some pets: 4 dogs, 3 cats,  and 1 turtle. Everyone in the family has one…she won’t bore you all with their names (unless you really want to know). Okay, you talked her into it! Jack, Pearl, Grr…(yes that’s her dog’s name), Callie, Shadow, Mooshoo, Grouchy, and Sorbert. Other than writing some of her other hobbies include: reading (mostly YA of course), singing, swimming, football, soccer, running, camping, sledding, church, hanging with her kids, and traveling.

She belong to a fabulous writing group called YA Fiction Fantatics (YAFF) and you guessed it they all write YA!

REPPED by Jennifer Mishler and Frances Black of Literary Counsel.

And that’s her in a big ‘ol nutshell.

{Guest Post by Mary Crockett} A Case of Two Sherlocks

Hey guys! Today I am excited to bring you a guest post from Mary Crockett, talking about one of my favorite things(obsessions)...Sherlock! In fact, I too struggle with the very thing she discusses ;) So without further ado...

Torn Between Two Sherlocks: Confessions of an Addict

When RachelMarie invited me to do a guest post for The NerdHerd Reads, I was excited but also a bit at a loss. My debut novel DREAM BOY is coming out next summer – which is mega-thrilling for me and my coauthor Madelyn Rosenberg, but it's maybe not the timeliest of topics as we approach the doldrums of winter.

Write about your writing process, RachelMarie suggested.

Ok, I thought. I write. All the time. This should be easy.

At which point I sat down at my computer, typed “WRITING PROCESS,” stood up, wandered around the house, ate a piece of toast, sat back down at the computer, retweeted some random stuff, and traipsed off to check on the dog.

That pretty much IS my writing process. Which may explain why I'm not meeting my National Novel Writing Month goals. Ah well.

Several toasts and dogs later, I eventually found my way back to the NerdHerd site to see what there might rouse my muse. It was then that I noticed RachelMarie's Sherlock Challenge. The heavens parted, angels sang, and I knew my topic. Because while DREAM BOY is half a year away, what IS right around the corner? Come on, you know this....

That's right. Season Three of The Most Awesome of Awesomes. I'm speaking of course of the BBC's SHERLOCK, premiering in the US January 19.

So, here's the thing: Since Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock left us wondering how he faked his own death so he could go terrorize hobbits and the Starship Enterprise, another Sherlock—Jonny Lee Miller's tatted, terse-lipped incarnation—has swooped in and stolen my affections.

Call me fickle? Fair enough. If you'd told me two years ago that I'd be in love with TWO different big-headed Brits who go around poking at dead bodies, I'd... well, I'd probably have thought you were a figment of my imagination and just ignored you. But that doesn't change the fact that my whorish little heart is confused.

I never intended to fall for Miller. In fact, when I suggested to my thirteen-year-old daughter that we watch Elementary as a sort of stop-gap between seasons of Sherlock, she responded as if I'd told her we were going to eat the cardboard cereal box just because we ran out of Cheerios.

It's going to be a long time before we get another Sherlock, I said. Let's just try it and see what happens.

Huffing. Eye-rolling. Silence.

They have a female Watson, I said.

Huff.

Just one episode. Come on. It's not like one episode is going to kill anybody.

Even to my own ears I sounded like a drug dealer trying to reel in a new customer.

But as it turns out, Jonny Lee Miller is a gateway drug. And now we're hooked not only on him, but also on Lucy Liu as Watson and on the idea of Holmes as a recovering addict and person-in-progress.

I am, to quote really bad 70's pop music, “torn between two lovers, feeling like a fool.”

To aid in my confusion, here's a little something I ran across when I googled “Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch” to see if anyone else was suffering from Sherlock Disorientation Anxiety.

Check out this promo for Danny Boyle's 2011 stage version of Frankenstein in which Jonny Lee Miller's Creature (who morphs into Benedict Cumberbatch's Creature) is conversing with Benedict Cumberbatch's Victor Frankenstein (who morphs into Jonny Lee Miller's Victor Frankenstein).

Keep in mind as you watch this, that I'm not only a Sherlock fangirl, but I'm also obsessed with Mary Shelley's novel—and in fact tried to convince my coauthor on several occasions that DREAM BOY is really a loose retelling of Frankenstein.

AKKK!!! It's like I'm the junkie and this is a really, really bad trip.
So, what to do?
Come new year, do I abandon Jonny Lee and his doe-eyed care of bees?
Do I schedule a Snuggie Pub Crawl on January 19 to keep me from the temptation that is Sherlock?
Both of these questions I answer with a resounding HECK NO!
I will instead seek to turn myself into (and this time I borrow from the country music cannon) “a two timin' woman with a heart of solid stone.” I will find out how Sherlock faked his death. I will know why Mycroft is scheming to lure Sherlock to London.
In short, I will learn to live with my own whorish heart, and I will love it.

Thank you Mary for this wonderful post! I was right there with your daughter on refusing to give it a shot until my friend pushed my to "just check it out". Now, I'm obsessed too, and will not apologize. Have not seen the Sherlock movie with RDJ yet though.

Who else here has a (more than) slight obsession with Sherlock?

2014 Series Challenge

So...yep. I've decided to join Octavia's 2014 Series Challenge. What is it? Well, basically, it's where you challenge yourself to read series. Oh wait. You didn't already get that from the title? Okay, it's a challenge to finish series. Now, these can be series that you've read one of or most of and just never got around to the rest. It can be series that you have always said that you absolutely going to read it....at some point and still haven't. As long as you finish the series.

For the list of official rules, as well as a run-down of the badge system and prize incentives, head on over to Read.Sleep.Repeat and read them. But here are the series that I am going to challenge myself to read in 2014.

Series I've started yet never finished:
Legend (Legend, #1)A Beautiful Dark (A Beautiful Dark, #1)Unwind (Unwind, #1)Divergent (Divergent, #1)A Breath of Eyre (Unbound, #1)Abandon (Abandon Trilogy, #1)The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1)Unearthly (Unearthly, #1)I Am Number Four (Lorien Legacies, #1)The Giver (The Giver Quartet, #1)The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1)Infinity (Chronicles of Nick, #1)

Series I've never started:
Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)Airel (The Airel Saga, #1)Mercy (Mercy, #1)Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1)Enclave (Razorland, #1)Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1)Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1)Starcrossed (Starcrossed, #1)Everneath (Everneath, #1)Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy, #1)Leviathan (Leviathan, #1)The Assassin's Curse (The Assassin's Curse, #1)Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1)Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)

So am I going to get to everything on this list? Gracious no. I'm a college kid after all. But it's a starting point of books that I really need to read. And so maybe I will.

Progress will be kept in a tab above, and I will be back every month with a checkpoint post.

{Guest Post by Meg Collett} The Angel in the Marble

Hey guys! I'm still on hiatus, but today I am excited to bring to you a guest post by Meg Collett, talking about her first book, The Hunted One, which will release January 14. So without further ado...here's Meg!

The Beginning...

I remember the exact day I started writing my debut novel, The Hunted One. It was Christmas Break in 2008. At the time I lived in Texas, where I went to Baylor University on an equestrian scholarship. I planned to fly home for the break, but the weather had delayed all the flights. Totally devastated, I drove back to my empty dorm. I was young, 18 years-old, and I just wanted to go home. My parents lived in Tennessee, so I was far from home, home-sick, and in desperate need of a hug. These feelings overwhelmed me until I pulled out an old composition notebook and started writing.

I have no clue where the story came from or why, but out poured this paranoid schizophrenic young woman with a drug problem. Obviously, I am not a paranoid schizophrenic with a drug problem. But I took a sliver of the emotions I felt that day, and I pushed them to the rawest point possible in my story. Weirdly enough, it made me feel better, and I’ve been writing ever since.

Years and many, many rewrites later, The Hunted One was finally realized. My tortured young character grew into the Archangel Michaela (adapted from Michael). I always equate my writing journey to a quote by Michelangelo:
“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

That day in December when I was scared and alone, I had this huge block of rock in front of me with a story waiting inside. Years later, nearly five drafts abandoned, and three completely trashed books, I have finally found my angel.

The Book:

Title: The Hunted One
Author: Meg Collett
Series: End of Days, #1
Release Date: Jan 17, 2014

The fallen have trespassed into Heaven for the first time in eternity. Prepared for battle, Michaela and her Archangels open Heaven’s gates to confront the fallen. Only, Michaela’s Archangels—her brothers and sisters in Heaven—betray her. And when the fallen attack the sanctuary in the skies through the gates Michaela inadvertently left open, the holy angels accuse Michaela of planning the invasion.

One simple mistake with a thousand consequences.

Dragged to Earth by an Archangel turned fallen, Michaela will do anything to return to Heaven and save it. In her fervor, she kills the Archangel—something no angel has ever done before. Wingless, without any hope, Michaela welcomes death when an unlikely human ally, Clark, finds her. With the help of Clark and Gabriel, an innocent Archangel whose friendship deepens into something far more torrid and unexpected on Earth, Michaela must prove the holy angels have their own plan for Heaven, and it is one that may prove to be the End of the Days.

It may be too late to save herself, but Michaela is the only one who knows the truth about the holy angels. If she fails, she may never be able to return to Heaven. But even that may be a hopeless dream.

The Author:

Meg Collett lives deep in the hills of Tennessee where there the cell phone service is a blessing and internet is a myth of epic proportions. She is the mother of one giant horse named Elle and one giant dog named Wylla. Her husband is a saint for putting up with her ragtag life. End of Days is her first series, and trust her when she tells you that she hopes you enjoy it, because it has been a big pain in her #%&. Just kidding. Sort of.

The Shadow Cats {by Rae Carson}

Title: The Shadow Cats
Series: Fire and Thorns, 0.5
Author: Rae Carson
Purchase: AmazonBarnes & Noble

Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness. And it was not Alodia.
Alodia is the crown princess of the realm. The sister who knows how to rule, and the one who is constantly reminded that she has not been marked for a grand destiny. But Alodia has plans, and she will be the greatest queen her people have ever known. So she travels--with her hopeless, naïve, chosen sister--to a distant part of their land, to begin to secure her supporters. This region needs its princesses, for it is plagued with a curse. The crops don't grow, the spring doesn't arrive, and a fierce jaguar stalks the shadows, leaving only empty homes splashed with blood behind. If Alodia can save them, no one will be able to deny her strength and her sovereignty.
But what she discovers could change the fate of her kingdom, if not her world. And it will most certainly change her opinion of her younger sister.

So I loved The Girl of Fire and Thorns. We didn't see much of Alodia, except for the fact that Elisa thought she hated her. And although Alodia wasn't the most likable character, I wanted to know more about her from her perspective. And that is what The Shadow Cats is, so of course I picked it up.

Alodia is the older sister, and crown princess. But her younger sister, Elisa, is the bearer of the Godstone. Because of this, Alodia feels cheated, overlooked, and rightly bitter. Alodia throws herself into kingdom, with plans to be the greatest queen ever, while Elisa sits around, naive and fat and hopeless (Alodia's thoughts, not mine). But everyone looks to Elisa, who is "destined" to do something great. Alodia, well, hates it.

This little novella was enough to give us insight to Alodia. She is bitter, yes, and it hard not to feel sorry for her, or at least understand where she is coming from. Even if you still don't like her, you respect her. Because she has worked so hard, only to be slighted. And no one can deny that Elisa was like that in the beginning, before the events of The Girl of Fire and Thorns.

But during the events of this novella, Alodia starts to understand her sister. Starts to understand that maybe she was reading her wrong, not valuing her enough. She starts to see that maybe she was wrong about Elisa, that she is so much smarter and braver than Alodia ever gave her credit for. And the fact that Alodia is big enough to admit this is what makes her a better, and more likable, person.

Although Alodia may be proper to the point of being a snob, everything she does is for the good of the kingdom. She truly does want to be a better ruler. And it helps that she is a strong ruler, both physically and emotionally. She isn't a damsel in distress. Instead, as this story shows, she is able and willing to fight and defend herself and others. Being the crown princess, she could wait for someone else to do it, as it their job. But she is fully capable of taking care of herself and isn't afraid of anything.

I don't if this is completely vital plot-wise, if what happens is going to come back and be important in the later books. But although it isn't completely necessary to read, it does give insight into the sister's relationship. And although it is a short story, it is still full action and emotion, like one of her novels. Thsi will definitely leave you wanting more of this world.

Although I will say... does $2.99 for an ebook seem like a lot? Yes. Did I buy it (and the other two) anyway? Yes. I do love this story and the characters, and so although it hurt, I bought them. (The ebook library service my local library had didn't have them.) But what do you consider a reasonable price for an ebook? I just think of the fact that I have bought full books for less than that and cringe.

Her father hangs for his discovery, and Lissa knows the Chancellors will come for her, for she saw the Earth that night too. With nothing to lose, she sets out to expose the truth. It isn't long before she meets Julian, a beautiful boy who can breathe the toxic air like she can - and shows her that the Jute, the original inhabitants of the planet, are more tangled in their lives than she knows.

PURCHASE! Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | iBooks

Hafsah Laziaf was born on the east coast on a hot summer day in 1993, raised on the west coast and is now stuck in the middle – in Texas – with more books than she can read. She’s the designer behind IceyDesigns and the blogger behind IceyBooks.

UNBREATHABLE is her debut novel.

Now, characters can be what make or break a story, right? But what we are most interested in...are the love interests. Am I right? (I'm right.) SO today, I have the character profiles of Lissa's two love interests, Julian and Rowan

Julian

Age: 20
Height: 5’ 11”
Lung Type: Can breathe Jutaire’s air without consequence - too much oxygen deems dangerous
Inspired by: Perfection?
Likes: Drawing, Earth, his mother, the color blue, Lissa
Dislikes: Power, Queen Rhea, Rowan, Gage

Since the death of his mother, all Julian has wanted is to join her. His grief from all that he has lost has led him to hurt himself. He’s broken in ways he doesn’t think can be fixed, and sees the world through a single lens, until it’s shattered by a few words Lissa says before thinking. He’s soft-hearted, cares for everyone but himself, and in the end, it nearly costs him his life.

Rowan

Age: 20
Height: 6’
Lung Type: Can only breathe the toxic air of Jutaire - full Jute
Inspired by: The Darkling (Shadow & Bone)
Likes: Power, attention, Lissa, Julian - even if he won’t admit it
Dislikes: Humans, Queen Rhea, anyone who stands in his way

Unlike Julian, Rowan’s grief has led him to hurt others and take revenge. The lines between good and evil are nonexistent in his eyes. As Julian’s half-brother, and twin in appearance, Rowan and Julian have identical needs, though their methods of acquiring them aren't as similar. Rowan’s desire for power and the need to be understood for who he is has blinded him to what is good and inclined him towards evil.
